ISLAMABAD – Users of WhatsApp in Pakistan experienced disruptions while using the app on mobile data, prompting a response from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).
Many users reported difficulties in sending and receiving media files via their mobile networks. The PTA addressed the issue, describing it as a technical glitch.
The telecom regulator acknowledged complaints about problems with sending and receiving media files, as well as slow or failed downloads.
Despite the PTA's statement, Downdetector, a well-known monitoring platform, recorded numerous reports of WhatsApp outages across Pakistan, with thousands of users expressing frustration.
Telecom companies also recognized the issue. A spokesperson mentioned ongoing investigations to resolve the disruptions and ensure uninterrupted service. However, some telecom providers declined to comment on the matter.
Internet Firewall in Pakistan
As the public seeks clear explanations, social media users and digital activists speculated that the disruption might be linked to the installation of a firewall designed to control internet and communication technologies.
This alleged firewall aims to block certain internet content, particularly on social media platforms, potentially restricting the sharing of evidence related to state actions.
